State of the Union: 2005

Posted on | February 2, 2005 |

Holy crap! State of the Union tonight — where have I been?

7:13 pm: Yay for liberty for all! Well, unless you’re homosexual.

7:14 pm: “We must use our taxes wisely.” Yes, indeed. Now about that whole Iraq thing…

7:16 pm: “We must make healthcare affordable for all.” Thank you Captain Obvious. Have any ideas how to do that?

(Aside: The clapping drives me nuts every year I watch the State of the Union address. I think the whole speech would be about 10 minutes long without all the clapping.)

7:20 pm: I don’t think Hilary could look less enthused if she tried.

7:21 pm: Apparently, if you puncuate any sentence with “terrorists,” you can get a standing ovation.

7:21 pm: Ah, social security. Now we’re getting down to business.

7:25 pm: Partial social security privatization is something I definitely agree with Bush on. I don’t want to pay into a system which may not be around when I am of retirement age. I want to be able to control my future.

7:31 pm: What?!? The government cares about “young Americans.” I don’t believe it. I need some evidence.

7:31 pm: And I, Mr. Bush, think you should get a grip. Even if a constitutional amendment banning homosexual marraige wasn’t completely discriminating and unconstitutional, is it really our biggest problem?

7:34 pm: What are activist judges? Ones that don’t always hand down the decisions the religious right want them to?

7:37 pm: Wait, what are we talking about? I dozed off while he talked about ABSOLUTELY OBVIOUS STUFF. (Less violence: good. Gangs: bad. Who knew?)

7:39 pm: Homeland security. More propaganda. I may tune out for awhile.

7:46 pm: More on terror. *hits snooze*

7:49 pm: Insert justification of war in Iraq here.

7:58 pm: Yes, we do appreciate our servicemen and women.

8:01 pm: Can I get three cheers for freedom?

8:03 pm: And…scene!

Conclusion: I don’t feel very satisfied. Where was the meat? I feel like I just heard a vegan State of the Union address. Perhaps the address isn’t supposed to be meaty, but what’s the point of a speech that mostly says obvious things we already know? A couple controversial topics such as gay marriage and social security reform were the only things that kept the speech mildly interesting. The rest? OBVIOUS — freedom is good, liberty is good, we appreciate our military, let’s have healthcare for all.

Maybe I’ve just become cynical and insensitive.

In case you care: My opinion on the State of the Union in 2004.

Snarkiest of all: Wonkette’s take on the State of the Union. “9:24 NUMBERS? He’s talking numbers? No wonder people are groaning. I thought we elected this president in order to avoid thinking about math!”

Minor point. Did you actually just say that a constitutional amendment can be unconstitutional?

Yes, yes I did. I thought about that as I constructed the sentence, but decided to leave it. The whole post is snarky, so why not nonsensical too?

N, I can’t remember the last riveting state of the union address that had me on the edge of my seat … anyone help me with this one? There supposed to be cliché’ and boring ..

We’ve got this guy for another 3.75 years .. lets not blow our proverbial load in the first 3 months .. give it time.. he sucks, we all know that .. but we have to just deal with what we got at this point.

It’s going to be a very long 4 years if there is non-stop bitchin’ and whining from all Democrats.

I want to note that I am not a Democrat. I’m also not a Republican. However, throughout the next 3.75 years, I will continue to respond to the President’s plans, ideas, speeches, etc.

Plus, I think bitching and whining are a good thing in a democracy. It means people still care. I would be quite worried if the Democrats stopped whining.
