…your chosen reading material for a long trip includes JavaScript Application Cookbook and The Great Big Book of Pencil Puzzles.
…you REALLY want a subscription to The Economist, but frustratingly can’t afford it sans job.
…one of the day’s highlights is finding O’Reilly’s MySQL and mSQL on the clearance tables at B & N. And sadly, Unix in a Nutshell had to stay on the tables.

As geeky as I think I am, I just can’t get myself into books like that–I can only use them as reference… I’m a pathetic geek. (or maybe just lazy)

Well, I usually use them as reference too, but, I must admit that I’m already at ch. 7 of MySQL and mSQL. And I was excited and surprised to find an appendix of Perl info at the back of the other.
Doug and Joe would be so proud.
